Choosing the right bartender may not be the first things you plan—but it’s definitely one your guests will remember. Whether you’re offering a signature cocktail, mocktails, or a simple beer and wine setup, the bartender you choose will play a big role in the flow and fun of your reception.
For couples planning weddings, in Northeast Ohio, from Alliance to Canton, Salem to Columbiana, hiring the right bartender can elevate your event while keeping things organized, safe, and within budget.
What to Look for in a Wedding Bartender

Proper Certification and Insurance
Make sure that the bartender or bartending service you choose is certified (meaning ServSafe or TIPS certified) and insured to serve alcohol in Ohio. Most wedding venues and event centers in Stark, Columbiana, and Mahoning Counties—including here at The Hidden Abbey—require proof of both before allowing alcohol to be served. In fact, bartending is the only vendor we require you to choose from our Preferred Vendor List. This policy is in lace to ensure that alcohol service is handled responsibly and safely, and that both bartender and the venue are properly insured. This is important because alcohol is served over a longer period of time and working with trusted professionals helps reduce the liability and creates a safer experience for everyone!
Wedding Experience
Weddings are different from typical parties. Bartenders should be comfortable with a busy pace, know how to interact with a diverse guest list, and be ready to adjust their timing based on the flow of events. Ask how many weddings they have done, and whether they have worked banquet halls, or smaller venues.
Clear Packages and Pricing
Some bartenders charge a flat hourly rate, while others have per-guest or open bar options. Ask about what’s included—such as mixers, cups, garnishes, bar tools, and staff. Be clear on setup and teardown responsibilities too, especially if your venue has limited serving time or needs a quick flip between ceremony and reception
Menu Flexibility
Can they help you create a signature drink? Do they offer mocktails or kid-friendly options? These questions will help you determine how creative or cost-effective their services can be, especially if you are trying to keep things affordable without sacrificing fun.

Professionalism & Personality
Your bartender is part of your guest experience. Look for someone with a good vibe—professional, friendly, and responsive. Read reviews and ask for references, particularly from other couples who hosted weddings using local bartenders in the Northeast Ohio area.
Helpful Questions to Ask Potential Bartenders
- Are you certified and insured in Ohio?
- How many weddings have you done?
- What packages do you offer and what is included?
- Do you assist in how much alcohol should be purchased?
- Do you provide your own bar setup or equipment?
- How do you handle intoxicated guests?
- Do you offer non-alcoholic options?

Budget Tips
Bar service can be one of the most flexible parts of your budget. You can save money by:
- Offering a limited menu (beer, wine, and one signature cocktail)
- Buying alcohol (if permitted by venue) from a company that will “Buy Back” any unopened cases of beer and wine (most will not buy back liquor)
- Having a shorter bar service window (e.g. during cocktail hour and dancing only)
- Skipping the champagne toast (many guests don’t drink it)
